How to Get Rid of Unwanted Stumps After a Tree Has Been Cut Down

Stumps are more than just an eyesore to your yard, they can also be a fire hazard, and attract unwanted pests such as termites and ants. Removing tree stumps is essential for the safety and aesthetics of your property. However, many homeowners aren’t sure how to get rid of the unsightly remains once a tree has been cut down.

Stump Grinding is a quick and effective way to remove a tree stump and its roots without tearing up your yard. Using a machine similar to a chainsaw, the stump is ground beneath the surface of the soil and left as wood chips. The chips can be used for mulch, buried in the ground to form a natural root barrier, or added to your compost bin.

Before grinding, Burke says it’s important to clear the area around the stump and assess the site for accessibility, any obstructing debris, and safety measures. He also recommends calling the utility company to have any underground lines marked before beginning the process.

Once the stump grinder is on site, he starts by positioning the cutting wheel at about 3 inches above the surface of the stump and begins grinding. He continues to move the machine in small increments, slowly working the cutter wheel down into the stump and cutting away layers of woody debris. The goal is to grind the stump to within a few inches of the ground, leaving a hole that can be filled with topsoil and grass seed and raked.

After the stump is removed, Burke suggests raking away any wood chips that were left behind. Grass seed can then be sow in the area, along with any other desired landscaping plants. Lastly, it’s important to add the proper amount of water and nutrients for the seeds to grow.

Stump Grinding is an efficient, effective, and relatively affordable way to get rid of unwanted stumps. However, this technique only works on mature forms of woody plants and should be combined with another method to address young trees/seedlings. It is not a good option for large areas of dense or overgrown shrubbery and requires professional equipment and knowledge to do the job correctly. Depending on the location and size of the stump, costs can range from PS100 to PS500+. Typically, smaller stumps are more affordable to remove as they are more accessible to the grinder. However, if the stump is located in a difficult to access place or has extensive underground roots, a higher quote may be needed.
