Tree Care – Pruning, Mulching and Treating For Pests

Trees need to be tended throughout the year to ensure their health and beauty. Whether the weather is mild or extreme, tree care can include pruning, mulching, and treating for pests. Often times, it’s best to leave complex tasks to a certified arborist – they can help protect the safety of your home and family, as well as the long-term health of your trees.

When planting, be sure to pick the right tree for your yard, and plant it in a location that will allow it to reach full size in its intended space. It’s also important to look up – check that the tree will not interfere with power lines, septic systems or other overhead utilities. Also consider the soil conditions in which you will be planting – some species need loose, fertile, well-draining soil, while others require more compact clay soil.

During its first three years, water a new tree frequently (once per week with 10 to 15 gallons). Then decrease frequency as the seasons change and into winter.

Pruning: It’s generally a good idea to let young trees grow unimpeded for their first two years, then begin pruning only to remove dead or problematic limbs and shape the canopy for healthy structure. Be careful not to prune too heavily or too soon, as this can cause stress, and in some cases, kill a tree.

Mulching: Applying a layer of mulch around the base of a tree can provide many benefits, including moisture retention, soil aeration and weed suppression. However, don’t pile the mulch up against the trunk – this can reduce airflow, suffocate the roots and create an ideal environment for pests. If you do pile mulch up against the trunk, be sure to maintain a 1 to 2 inch circle of bare ground.

Chemical Treatments: In some instances, the use of chemicals is necessary to manage invasive plants or insects that threaten the health and structure of your trees. When this is the case, the Ahlum & Arbor team will provide expert guidance to ensure that only the minimum amount of chemical is used.

Watch for signs of insect infestations or disease and respond quickly to prevent problems from escalating. Often, small problems become large issues, so monitoring regularly is a great way to stay on top of your tree’s health.
