The Importance of Tree Trimming

Tree Trimming is the removing of dead or unwanted branches and limbs, as well as shaping a tree for its desired shape. This is a very important service to provide because it can help promote the health and longevity of trees.

It can also reduce hazards associated with overgrowth or misshaped branches. For example, a tree with overgrown branches that impede the flow of water can be left susceptible to rot and insect infestations. Branches that grow in the wrong direction can push into electrical utility lines or cause damage to buildings, structures, and other property. Additionally, overgrown branches can create a tripping hazard for people and cars.

When a branch is pruned, the cuts must be made correctly to prevent disease and decay from entering into the parent stem or other branches. The ideal cut is a “slanting” cut that creates a natural callus on the bark and expedites healing. If the branch is to be completely removed, it is crucial to make the first cut on the underside of the limb and then move up about an inch. Afterward, the final cut should be made just outside of the branch collar. This is the raised area of tissue around the base of a branch and can be identified by its slight swelling and rougher bark.

For summer-flowering or fruit trees, pruning should occur in late winter or early spring while the plants are dormant. This will allow them to recover and set buds for the following growing season without sacrificing their beautiful blooms.
